Film showing of “Trip Along Exodus” which explores the last 70 years of Palestinian politics seen through the prism of the life of the filmmaker’s father, Dr. Elias Shoufani, a leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and an academic and leftist intellectual who was one of the leaders of the opposition to Arafat within Fatah for 20 years. Performing Palestine: Culture as Resistance
To discuss the interplay between Palestinian culture and resistance, the cafe welcomes Mustafa Awad, founder of the Raj’een Palestinian Dabke group in Brussels and Kamel Badarneh, a Palestinian electronic music composer. Each speaker will address the topic of culture as resistance from their own artistic standpoint. Each presentation will be followed by an open Q&A and discussion. With South African guest Gadija Vallie In collaboration with Tadamum. Gadija lives in South Africa and has been a long standing activist against apartheid. She will explain what it meant to grow up under Apartheid. Ghadija’s presence will be an opportunity to examine the similarities between South Africa’s apartheid regime and today’s situation in Palestine, as well as the way to struggle against oppressive situations. Obliterated Families: a web documentary on Gaza
ABP is hosting “Obliterated Families”, a multimedia web documentary about families from the Gaza Strip whose lives were shattered in the Israeli offensive in 2014. Over the course of two years, more than 50 families in the Gaza Strip were interviewed and photographed. The research was done in collaboration with the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, based in the Gaza Strip. Mahmoud AbuRahma, head of the Al Mezan Center, will also take part in this exciting event. Occupied East Jerusalem: Tales from a Divided City
Café Palestine will host Lior Volinz, a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam researching the pluralization and privatization of security provision in Jerusalem. Lior, who conducted extensive ethnographic research in East Jerusalem, talking about some of the Israeli policies in Occupied East Jerusalem, including residency revocation, the growth of Jewish-Israeli settlements and the unequal and militarized policing used in this divided city. Please remember, the cafe has moved and is now at La Fleur en Papier Doré!
